Thursday Art Date: Coils

Hello Friends!! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Coils. I had a tough time with this theme...but I took to my Spirograph and started to make some coiled flowers...I thought, well, maybe I could add one (digitally) to my cartoon this week. I came up with the squirting flower gag! Of course, Daffy Duck had to be the one to receive it from Bugs Bunny....what a stinker! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I surprised myself by coming up with quite a few drawings this week. This one, in ink, is from the movie Rope starring Jimmy Stewart. In the movie poster he's holding a coiled rope...the murder weapon!! I've talked about my favourite Hitchcock movie before, but if you want to watch the trailer, click on this link

On the subject of thrillers that will knock your socks off, a great Michelle Pfeiffer movie is "What Lies Beneath". I drew her, in ink/graphite, in the bathtub as she recoils in fear from what is going on around her (I won't give it away!!) I watched the movie again last night and boy, it was amazing. It's such a good suspense/thriller, you never know what's coming next!! Also starring Harrison Ford - he was great in this!

Here is the official trailer.

Any Little House On The Prairie fans out there? Do you remember the nasty little girl named Nellie Olson? She had the most amazingly perfect coiled curls! She was so horrible to Laura Ingalls and usually got her come-uppance!!! I did a quick doodle of her in ink and graphite. If you were a fan of the show, I'm sure you remember the wheel chair scene...I think I jumped up and clapped when Laura pushed Nellie down that hill!!

I'm a big Three Stooges fan...though Shemp is my favourite, Curly is a close runner up! Those Howard boys...So I asked Curly what he thought of Nellie Olson's hair...that was his response! ๐Ÿ˜Š Any Stooges fans out there?

Okay enough with the coils!!! Let's eat! I made two, count 'em TWO Pour In The Pan Pizzas this week!!

I had a chocolate craving (sorry Joyce! ๐Ÿ˜), so I made chocolate chocolate chip muffins! Sorry I can't share, they are all gone!

If you eat toast, what do you put on it? I had a hard time deciding between strawberry jam and my Homemade Cheez Whiz!!

Exciting to see my garlic coming up!

I went back to that 6km trail and took Charlie with me. It's so nice to be out. I saw a lovely old tree that looked very wise in her years...do you see her face?  ๐Ÿ˜Š

I passed by the duck pond and saw these lovely creatures. Aren't the colours amazing?

I'm linking up with these wonderful bloggers today, or at least trying (!!), please visit them for some really interesting posts! And why not join in on the link parties? You can meet some really nice people!! ๐Ÿ˜Š

  1. Hello rain,
your cartoon is again a very amusing scene ... laugh that makes Bugs Bunny fun!
The picture of the spirograph is great, it reminds me of the past when I had it and my children were so excited about it too.
The curls with the nasty facial expression, oh yes that was a bitchy girl in the film with her mother!
Great drawings with the rope or with the facial expression with the eyes.
That's funny about the tree, it really looks like a face and I'll wave to you, you wu went for a nice walk again with the dog and the pretty ducks!
Have a good time, hug Elke

  2. Love your ducks and your art. Drool at your food.
And yes, I did see the face in the tree. Thank you.

  5. Oh Rain I had so much fun with my Spirograph as a child, wish I had it now, what a clever tool that was it makes a good rosette for Bugs to wear with pride. I chuckled so much @ your Nellie Olson, my how sour faced she was do you think it's because her ringlets were pulled extra tight hee hee..
Good to see your garlic coming through, I'm trying my hand with it this year and it's looking good on the outside, can not wait to see what we unearth when the time comes..
    Hugs Tracey xx

  6. yes, I see the old lady in the wood. And, yes, the Mallard pair looks great. They do have nice colors. :)
Your new rail looks kind of what I walk in daily too. One have to be careful when stepping on wood. :)
The garlic is supposed to be healthy so I gave it to my daughter who has asthma. But, she turned out to be allergiq to the garlic. Not fun!
    Take care!

  7. You gave me a toughie there Rain. But, after a little thought I found birdy coils. Nellie Olson? Yes, I remember now, a horrible child. If you have any trouble eating those muffins my grandkids will help you out big time. You grow garlic too? I thought it grew only in warm climes south of the Equator. Shows how much I know.

  8. ...my daughter is a fan of Little House and went to presentation by the actress that played Nelly. She said that it was wonderful.

  9. I am enchanted by the picture of the pair of Mallards, seriously beautiful and seriously overlooked. We have grown garlic but our yield has never been especially prolific. The other day I bought some blue cheese from New Brunswick and it was delicious - and expensive! Like all things from NB, however, worth its weight in gold! If ever COVID relents I am looking forward to visiting again.

  10. Finny coul cartoon and beautiful art this week Rain. I don’t know how you are not overweight with all that delicious food you make! Enjoy springtime!

  11. Your portraits of Michelle Pfeiffer, Nellie Olson and Curly are outstanding! Especially "Coily" -- what a mug that guy had!

  12. Oh Rain!!! Chocolate chocolate chip? WOW ! My favorite toast is peanut butter and mayonnaise...don’t judge . I do see the old wise woman of the woods! I love to find those things in nature. When we see some boards being cut on a sawmill, sometimes I see the faces of animals, or people...freaky, but when ya see it, ya can’t unsee it! Lol! That garlic looks just like mine! Great! Love those ducks! How’s sweet Jack?

  13. That's a tricky theme! Well done. It's cold and wet here today in Michigan and a good day to bake something! Muffins might be the trick!

  19. I've been missing your posts, and missing you. I like the picture of you and Charlie. I do see the faace in the old tree. We had baby wood ducks leaving their nest this morning. They dropped into the pond from their nest box. Your cooking, and your art is amazing.

  20. Oh my goodness... I had to go and watch that trailer. It does look like a good movie, but I think the trailer may give me a nightmare. Very creative development of the theme coils. :)

  21. Hi Rain,
I am really impressed by your artworks, but also by the cheeses you make. Nice the way you do this and also the way you make your blog with this beautiful coast. Very inspiring.
Greetings and a very nice weekend.

  22. Oh my, you do like the scary movies, don't you :)Your drawings are wonderful and accurate and your trailers ... Yikes! You have been in a pizza mood of late ... all look delicious. Not sure about cheese and jam on the same piece of toast though, but chocolate chip muffins I could go for :) We haven't started our gardens yet this year ... usually wait until May because the rain keeps everything muddy. But, that said, I am having to weed the perennial flower beds already. Those pesky weeds, I swear they grow all winter. And yes, I do see the crooked smile and pretty face in your wise old tree. We have that in common ... seeing faces in things that is. all for today ... Have a wonderful week of Spring :)

  23. You are such a great cartoonist- love it Rain! But I also love your impressive portrait drawings- SO good. (I watched the movie Rope twice- great movie) And speaking of good, your pizzas and cupcakes look delicious. I'll pass on the toast though;)
So nice to see things coming to life again outdoors isn't it. Happy PPF and happy weekend!

  24. Hi, Rain! I haven't even read your post, although I saw the photos. I'm just touching bases with you. Terry had a bad heart attack and heart stoppage on Saturday. He's alive and doing well, but we're both still shocked and exhausted. I'll be back!

  25. My favourites of your artwork are Curly and Bugs.

  26. Looks great! I love that movie What Lies Beneath truly a good thriller. Apparently Michelle Pfeiffer is afraid of water so she didn't have to look so terrified I guess since you already actually was! Would love to see more tours of your Gardens and more Critters that you're getting? We're going to be redoing part of our backyard and then pretty soon we'll be getting ready to plant some veggies. Finally warming up! Supposed to be 75 this weekend

  27. Fabulous art again, I just love your Daffy duck ones. Looks like great food too.

  28. I didn't drool too much at the pizza pics this week, Rain, because we had homemade Detroit pizza for dinner. It was really good, almost like a Sicilian pie baked in a metal 13x9 pan. The dough reminded me of focaccia bread too. Those chocolate chip muffins would have been all gone in our home as well. Rope is a good movie and even more so because it's based on a true story of young killers, so sad.

  29. Hello Rain,

I love your Bugs and Daffy art! I am not sure if I have seen the ROPE movie but I have seen What Lies Beneath. Your drawing of Nellie Olson is perfect, she was such a mean bully. I love the shot of you and your Charlie on the trail, the ducks are cute. The garlic is growing well. The pizza and muffins look delicious. I have to keep practicing with making the pizza dough. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post! Take care, have a happy weekend. PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.

  30. Such an interesting post. I like your art, food and the ducks. Thanks for the Hitchcock movie link. I'll watch after I complete Agatha Christie's Poirot series.

  31. I love seeing you and your dog out and about...the tree DOES have a neat face! Love your Nellie art! You captured her perfectly! Happy weekend!

  32. Oh that poor actress who played Nellie, hated forever and with good reason! Great portraits all around. I actually prefer when Ford plays the villian. I've really grown tired of that deer in the headlights look of his. Yummy pizza and muffins, until last week I'd been having one double chocolate muffin a day. Now I'm having a diet, lol. Each one of the ones I ate from the grocery store bakery was 700 calories, yikes! But oh so good. :-) xoxo

  33. I absolutely adore the Bugs Bunny pic, and you sure have a way of helping us to remember those old school programs(lol) I do remember Naughty Nellie, and your picture sure does a good job of depicting her. I sure wish there was a way I could transport myself to your home for food and goodies!(lol) AND you have snow, so you may end up with a permanent house guest!(lol) Hope you are doing well and sending lots of hugs, RO

I always enjoy doing spirograph with our youngest grand-daughter, it's fun.

    All the best Jan

  36. Rain - amazed you still have a spirograph!!! And yes, Nellie Olson is a character that we all loved to hate ... (although I am sure Pa would chastise us for hating anyone, with a twinkle in his eye ....) Oh, I think I put on a pound just looking at the chocolate decadence of those muffins. I loved the texture of the water in the duck photo ... Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

  39. Great illustrations again! I am particularly impressed by Michelle Pfeiffer in the bathtub. Pizza - delicious! We also had homemade pizza (with salmon) this week.
Nice photos from your walk with Charlie and the ducks in the pond - and of course I see the wise woman in the tree ("Grandmother Willow")! And adorable, fluffy young ducks (or geese?) <3 <3 <3

  41. Oh gosh, that tree really does have a face, I’m in awe. Beautiful walk. I Loved your art (that squirting flower just is so perfect for that stinker Bugs,I can hardly believe it was never an actual scene in a Saturday matinee cartoon! Also always love your reminders of great old movies (I keep adding to my list , because someday we’re going to get through all the shows in our Netflix queue )). And as always your food! I like toast with peanut butter, but your half n half could make me change up my morning routine.

  42. My husband was a big "Three Stooges" fan and even saw them perform in person on stage when he was a child in Brooklyn, NY. He said they were really funny.

I also had a spirograph as a child so seeing yours and this theme brought back memories. You did a great job with an unusual theme challenge!
