πŸ’€ Thursday Art Date: Urban Legends πŸ’€

Hello Friends, 😊

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Urban Legends. Tweety Bird and Bugs Bunny are re-enacting a very cute version of a popular urban legend: The Tooth Fairy. I remember receiving dimes whenever I lost my baby teeth...I wonder how much The Tooth Fairy leaves kids these days? I recently read a much more sinister version of this legend...I'll spare you the details!! πŸ‘€

Note: Starting next Thursday, I'm changing the art date's linky to expire on Fridays at midnight. Please revisit to make sure you don't miss those who join in a little late! Also, if anyone adds a link that has nothing to do with the art date theme, it will be removed!

A Local Urban Legend!!

Legend of the Dangarvon Whooper: A young man took on a job as a cook with a logging company in northern New Brunswick. His only possession was a money belt filled with coins. He was well-liked and whooped as he laughed and made jokes. One night, the boss of the camp killed him and stole his money belt. When the crew woke up, the boss told them that he'd been sick and died overnight. Due to a storm, the loggers couldn't leave the area and had to bury the young cook in a shallow grave in the nearby Dangarvon Woods. To this day, if you walk by those woods, you can hear whooping and screaming from the tormented spirit of the young cook. (Ink and watercolours)

Another fine urban legend is that Twinkies can survive the end of the world...likely because most of their ingredients are non-pronounceable! I got inspiration from the original logo "Twinkie The Kid" and the face from the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. (Pigment liner pens and graphite)

The Black-Eyed Children: On cold, dark autumn nights, beware as you get into your car. You may hear a scratching at your window from lost children who beg you to drive them home. These are not children, they are evil creatures who are pale with black eyes who intend you great harm. (Black and white charcoal)

Jack and Marlene - Waiting for Supper

A grouse hangs out on my front step every morning - not a great photo, I took it through the window!

This is Trigger. He ran away from a neighbour's home 12 days ago. They rescued him from a bad home and were trying to re-home him when he squirmed his way out of the collar he was wearing. He's a 3-year old Sharpei. He's been roaming the blueberry fields. Alex and I have been out daily trying to find him and bring him home. The SPCA has a live trap set up at an abandoned camp where he was last seen. Fingers crossed we find him! I'd love to keep him if we can find him, but we'll have to see how he gets along with the six other furries first!

OCT 24 UPDATE: WE CAUGHT TRIGGER!!!!! He's currently at a (no-kill) shelter being looked after by a vet and they will find him a good home! πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡ We realized that it would be too much for us to keep him, plus him and Charlie did NOT get along! Our dogs come first. I know he'll find a loving forever home!

Jack spotting deer in the distance; Charlie looking for deer in the blueberry fields; Charlie, Jack and me looking for Trigger

My 2020 garden was a bust - many factors worked against me, including a late start due to buying a house and moving during Covid; the rock dust that sprayed the garden when we had our well drilled; and a very hot and dry summer. BUT...I managed to harvest about 30 small potatoes and plant my garlic for the spring. I also put my asparagus bed to rest for the winter. I'm not sure I'll do a garden next summer or not...we'll see!

We ate leftover Thanksgiving food for four days! The highlight of this week was this pizza that Alex created: Peach jam and goat cheese on a pita, drizzled with BBQ sauce - it was SO delicious! We're eating from the freezer and pantry this week, I have to do the monthly shopping this weekend.

  2. You found some incredible urban legends, Rain. And you drew them beautifully, too. You are SO gifted (and talented, too). Bleubeard doesn't think I found any urban legends, so he is hiding. You, on the other hand, he approves of!

Loved seeing your critters. They are always a joy to watch. Sorry about your garden. However, you and Alex spent a lot of time setting it up, so I hope you continue with it next year.

I'll be by soon with my post.

  3. You painted great creepy and funny pictures and this legend that there are many such where it spits.
The dog Trigger is so cute and hopefully you will find him, he would have a good home with you if it works.
Great moving photo of your two dogs and with the sun these are always wonderful walks that you take.
You did a lot with the harvest, great!
    The pizza looks so delicious!
I wish you a good week and take care of yourselves, hugs Elke

  4. Your black eyed children is awesome - and may haunt me.
I do hope that Trigger can come to live with you. Fingers crossed.
And, as always, your food looks delish.

  7. Hi. Nice tooth fairy you have today. :) Sadly I don´t have any children in my family now. They are all grownups. So no tooth fairy around.

Your four-legged friends really looks hungry. I hope you find the runaway one. :) Garlic is said to be good for you, but when my daughter was about 12 I tried garlic in order to improve her asthma. Turned out it got worse. She was obviously allergic to them. But you probably has to trouble.
    Take care!

  10. Okay... I admit it - I scrolled as fast as I could past all the spooky stuff just to get to the animal pictures. I can't bring myself to read your post, Rain (though my eyes landed on the words "Black Eyed Children..." after seeing the picture and I now have to work to get that out of my mind. lol Thank you for providing the always entertaining and endearing pictures of your animals. They got me down to the comment section where I can leave you a note to let you know I was here. :)

  13. The Twinkie legend was in the news last week. When it appeared that the Hostess company was out of business and Twinkies would be no more, a guy saved some. That was in 2012. Recently he ran out of deserts. So he went down the basement, opened the 2012 vintage Twinkie, and TOOK A BITE. He must have cravings that I can't even imagine. It was HORRIBLE. The remaining Twinkies are being examined in a lab that studies bizarre microorganisms. The photos were disgusting.

Nice collection of untrue but believed stories!

  14. Very nice art, as always, Rain. I am with Becki again, scrolling quickly past the spooky bits! Love those critters, and your food pics. You did get a nice little haul of potatoes! Glad you got your garlic in. It is one of the easiest things to grow, and I think if I could grow only one thing, garlic would be it. Good luck with the dog-catching!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Great spooky stories and art, Rain! My Rare One is trying her hand at growing garlic too and just planted hers a week or so ago, after she rototilled the garden in preparation for next year.

  16. Love the bugs bunny and the Twinkie made me laugh. A lot of the "fairy tales" when you read the original were less than the happy ending ones we know today. Most were very gruesome in fact.
Enjoyed this week and look forward to creating something for next time.

  17. Oh, be still my heart! I can finally access your blog!!!! Now I have to catch up on months' worth of your doings.. xo

  18. That gif of Jack and Marlene is precious. Marlene has such a pretty face, so innocent. Trigger is a pretty boy. He looks like he has black velvet for fur. I hope you catch him. I would save those potatoes for planting next year. When the time comes, cut them and mix them in fireplace ashes and then plant them. Save your fireplace ashes this winter in a big bucket or drum and then mix the planting beds with it.

  19. Hi Rain. I blew it this week. I simply ran out of time so I didn't get what I wanted on the post. I do like your forest and the black eye'd girl. Really beautiful. Ahhhh Trigger. He is a beauty too bad he is a runner. We had a runner once too. We changed a few things in our home and that fixed it. Your potatoes look fantastic! I just took garlic out of the freezer and planted it as well. I was wondering what to fix for dinner tonight and now I know Pizza. Thanks LOL Have a great day.

  20. Such fantastic art! The black eyed children is a little too spooky! I sure hope the pretty pup is found. glad you were able to get a few things from the garden.

  21. Oh where to start ... I guess from the top. My FH and I have been watching reruns of the TV Series "Bones" ... Have you watched it? Anyway they just had a program where their little girl lost a tooth and the Mom (Bones) was insisting that giving a child money from an unreal entity would confuse them and wasn't appropriate. While her husband (Booth) insisted it was an important part of growing up ... can you guess who won? Anyway, as always, your artwork is excellent, especially the pastels on black paper. You have really mastered that process :) Oh, my heart aches for Trigger. I hate that animals pay the price for peoples inhumanity. I do hope you find him and are able to integrate him into your family ... it won't be easy though. He is going to have a lot of fears built into his personality. So, I didn't know you planted garlic in the fall ...do you use store bought or are those from your previous gardens? Can you email me the process. I know my DIL would love to plant garlic. She puts it in everything :) Perhaps the people who lived in your place fed the grouse and she is waiting ... maybe even depending on a handout. Do you put food out for the birds? I think you would attract some magnificent specimens if you did ... just sayin' :) Anyway Marlene and Jack waiting for supper is a familiar site, especially the licking tongue :) Wonderful, fun post, Rain. Keep us posted on Trigger :) Stay well ...

  27. Your cartoon looks great! I like the idea of planting garlic. Never tried that. Love your peach and cheese pizza. Looks delicious.

  28. Great artwork in those black-eyed children are scary! I hope you guys can get closer and rescue that dog or someone can before the snow flies I'd hate to see a dog freeze to death out in that kind of weather. Well at least you got some vegetables harvested! Starting with a new house and everything is tough so maybe next year you'll do better. Or if you have lots of great produce available locally anyway you could always support your local farmers

  29. Your potatoes look good. I loved the picture of Jack and Marlene waiting for dinner. I like how your charcoal has depth, but boy is it scary!

  31. I sure do miss your blogs. I hope that the babe is caught and taken back to where he ran from. He will learn that being rehomed and loved is not so bad! I bet you have been getting ready for your first winter in the new place! I love it. Although I am not looking forward to winter but I am loving our fall like temps right now. Wondering how classes are going or if you are finished. You have grown in your art.

  32. Your potatoes look great. And YAY for the garlic. Tried that once and just one plant came up. *LOL* Crossing my fingers, that you find Trigger and can bring him home.

  38. love your zombie halloween party picture, lots of character! Trigger looks an interesting chap, you must have a huge expanse of land for him to wander without being seen - I hope he hears your dogs and comes to you - he must be hungry and frightened.

  39. Hello Rain,
Thank you for the lovely comment you left me!
Uuuh, your urban legends are pretty scary (apart from the tooth fairy ;-)) - but that goes very well with Helloween. And I like your artistic implementation very much.
But I was especially happy about the photos of your animals. And I really hope you will find Trigger!

Your pups are so sweet looking. The legend of the young cook is a sad one. Thee is so much theft in the world today it's sad.

The pizza your son made looks delicious. Your potato harvest looks good and so does your spring garlic bed.

I hope you have a great weekend, Rain. :)

  54. Hi Rain, these stories were certainly just in time for Halloween this week, thanks for posting them. We do not decorate or have any plans for Oct 31. Our grandchildren in RI will dress-up but are not going out trick or treating. Their mom told us she discussed it with them and they opted out. However, a family relative who lives in the state is having a small family gathering so they will be able to wear costumes. Too bad many children will be disappointed and adults as well.
