Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Forest and Critters! Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck landed the roles of Hansel and Gretel this week. They just emerged from the haunted forest. What do you think - will they go into the candy house or call their agents for less dangerous acting jobs? 😊

Here's Algie in oil pastels - I've been wanting to whip those pastels out for a while now! Oil pastels are so much fun to use! Algie was one of the three squirrels that Alex and I found in our basement walls last spring. We babied those critters for nearly two months before releasing them into the woods. Algie was the gentlest and the sweetest of the three - here's a video I took with her in my pocket.
Here's a gorgeous critter! This drake is a chick-magnet with his brilliant colours! We are lucky to live in an area where we can see such lovely wildlife all year round!

I really enjoyed using my markers this week! I love how colourful they are when you mix them up with coloured pencils! This is my Enchanted Mushroom Forest. Alex and I went to the art supply store a few days ago and I'm just itching to try new things...I'm thinking about pan pastels, charcoal, oil pencils and special blending tools. Art is so much fun!!!
Still using that watercolour layering technique, I decided to paint the biggest critter in the forest, the moose. I ran into a moose once during a long mountain hike in Orford Quebec, he was very docile. I kept my distance though. I WISH I had a photo to show you! But I think my nerves got to me and I'm not one of those idiots who tries to take a "selfie" with a wild animal! 😊 You definitely don't want to run into a male moose during mating season, they are known to be very aggressive during the rut. They are beautiful animals, the largest deer species in the world.
Something got the dogs' attention this morning!
Jack got cold and ran for the door; but the girls kept digging. I'm guessing a little critter must have hopped across the ground before it snowed.

ReplyDeleteHansel and Gretel aka Bugs & Daffy don't know what they are getting themselves into with old Broom Hilda or maybe it's Broom Hilda don't know what's in store for her. lol Of course, I remember Algie...well, I wouldn't know which little squirrel is which without you telling me but I do remember those little furballs that you guys found in your basement. Do they visit anymore? Oh WOW, you came upon a moose in the wild? That had to be crazy exciting and a bit scary. I'm glad he left you along. I've heard that Moose can be dangerously aggressive. We have elk in the Smoky's and those critters are big! The terrorists, better known as tourists, are very dumb. I see people walking close to bear or moose who are inviting the animal to attack. No picture is worth getting injured for! Nice job on your paintings, my dear. :) The duckie is so vividly bright. I just love its colors!
Hey, I understand about putting up a warning to those who join a linky who aren't playing along with others. Usually, I find most are goofs and didn't realize the theme of the linky party. I always try to encourage those to play along next time.
It's so cold in East Tennessee. Winter has arrived early it seems. We got a little snow on Tuesday but it's the frigid temps that I really hate. Spring...where are you? :)

I love your watercolour moose!! Many years ago, when husband and I were driving through New Brunswick, we saw a few moose. One, a young one, was right on the road when we were coming around a bend. Thankfully we were going slowly (because it was so "bendy") and were able to stop with room to spare. It just ambled away, without a care in the world. They are HUGE. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteAh, Algie. Such cute little guys those 3 were. We should be seeing some mallards soon. They migrate here in the winter along with Canadian geese. You can't miss the geese. They " announce their arrival mid flight. Quite noisy.

ReplyDeleteI haven't done another drawing this week, not yet. I like mixing my oil paint markers with coloured pencils. It's really fun.
Love your oil pastel portrait of Algie the Squirrel, and your watercolour moose! I must learn that watercolours layering technique too! It creates such a gorgeous result.

ReplyDeleteRain, Beautiful choices once again. Frozen here in NE GA mountains. Of course when the temps do warm up, it'll rain. We;ve gone through 1/2 a cord of wood already. Needs to dry out some so we can split some more. Jo

I just love your cartoon Bugs paintings. You do such a great job with them. I am so sorry that I have not been playing along with Art Date this yr. As you know, life threw me that wicked curve ball and I am still trying to adjust to life as is. My painting has gone by the way side and if I don't get this house in order and cleaned someone might come condemn my home....I never want to do anything but work and sit. Hoping you are well. Hello Rain! I am catching up today on inside projects, and my blog friends. We have been absolutely slammed here on the ridge. The new building is thankfully coming along. The concrete was poured just before our temps went to freezing, thankfully! I have been too many hours in the tractor seat....just sayin! Enjoyed your art, and your babies. Jack puts me in mind of our little Jack Russell....he does not do the winter well...lol... guess he’s still a Florida pup!

ReplyDeleteThanks Valerie :) Algie totally stole my heart when we had her. If it was only her that we found, I think we would have kept her as a pet. Though we've heard that gray squirrels are much more affectionate than red ones, I can't imagine any other critter who would have been more gentle and sweet!!

ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy :) I think you may be right! Old Broom Hilda is in store for a lot of hi jinx lol! The squirrels were visiting a lot in the summer and what fall we had. We knew it was them because Spunky always climbed the side of the house towards our bedroom window...that was incredibly cute. Algie and Frasier were always together and they visited together too. They never came closer than the bird feeder though. But they never ran away if we approached them and when we said their names, they ran up and down the trees. Adorable! Now though, we don't see them as much, but hoping they found a warm spot for the winter. The moose was HUGE and honestly intimidated me a lot, I was very nervous and kept looking behind my back! I actually got a linky link for someone who was just trying to sell their goods, I'm not into that!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jenn :) That's scary. Driving into an adult moose can kill people...even the babies are huge. When I was visiting homes in NB last spring, I saw a LOT of moose there on the highways. Just as I was entering Fredericton, a large truck about 200 feet in front of me slammed on his brakes, so I did too, then I saw a moose just wandering happily across the road in front of him.
