The River Down The Road (I walk the dogs in that part of the woods each morning!) |
Hello Friends! :) !!!!!!!
I'm adding more exclamation marks because summer has FINALLY arrived in the Laurentian mountains! :) I'm sitting on my porch this sunny Sunday afternoon, "glowing" (NOT sweating) in the 30 degree hot and humid weather! I'm drawing and painting, sipping on a white wine spritzer, safely tucked inside my screened-in porch, hiding from the black flies. Ain't this the life? :)
The girls: Charlie and Marlene - smart lassies, keeping cool under the cedar trees!
Lazy Leo enjoying some top-shelf relaxation on the porch. :)
Dana and Baby Oscar are choosing to hang out in my office this afternoon - it's a bit cooler in there.
Handsome Jack - always keeping me company! :) ♥
Because I just can't seem to control myself...I made another raised bed the other day. I wanted a special spot to plant yet more lettuces.
I had some leftover 2x10's so I fashioned them into a raised bed, filled it with soil/compost and planted Romaine, Iceberg and Buttercrunch. We had a little pex piping in the basement, so I made a few hoops so that I can cover the lettuce bed if it gets too hot and sunny. The only cost was the soil, I had everything else handy. The three bins to the right are where I planted my potatoes this year.
And...with summer weather, comes summer eating!! After building the raised beds, I was pooped so Alex surprised me with a grilled cheese/tomato sandwich with fries. We ate on the porch, it was really nice!
Last night I was overcome with cooking "mojo" so I made a dinner platter for us. "CLT's" (Cheddar, lettuce and tomato sandwiches), homemade potato salad with homemade mayo, some olives, pickles and store-bought chips (can't seem to perfect my own potato/corn chips yet!). We brought this platter to bed while we watched a really bad, yet strangely hilarious David Spade movie called Joe Dirt.
Have you ever made mayonnaise? I had such a difficult time making it in the past, but I found a great way to make it - success each time! With my immersion blender! You take a deep glass container (like a large wide-mouth Mason jar), drop in a room temperature egg, a cup of olive oil, 2 tsp of lemon juice, some salt and powdered mustard if you like; then stick the blender inside and blend. It's SO EASY and works every time! I'll make a video one of these days! Alex loves it, the store-bought mayo gives him indigestion so this works perfectly. I can't eat it though, I have an egg yolk allergy, so it's (sigh) store-bought for me - which I'm SURE contains some kind of "egg product"...but my allergy doesn't kick in, so I don't ask questions!
Did I mention that I made ice cream sandwiches with my Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies? Oooh la la!! :)
Alex got me a new hat!!! He wanted me to have one for the summer, it's a straw hat, a Resistol "George Straight" model. I love it! :) Consider this my new gardening hat! :)
Speaking of gardening, this is my gardening shelf. Alex found an old oar in the basement - we're guessing a previous renter left it behind; so we put some hooks into it for my gardening tools. Isn't it cute?
My "greenhouse" is doing a great job! My tomatoes, beans, eggplant and green pepper plants are doing so well! Yahoo!
Speaking (again) of gardening, this Thursday's art theme is Garden for anyone who wants to join in! (Follow the link for inspiration and ideas)
Love your new hat, cowgirl!
ReplyDeleteDang girl.....you truly have more energy than three people combined! All your gardening is fabulous. You will be eating wonderful homegrown items for many months. Your critters have the right idea in the heat. Just relaxing. Your new hat is cute and perfect for summer gardening.
ReplyDeleteIn answer to your question about experimenting with GF bread....I dont8do total GF as you normally have to add either Xanthum Gum or another Gum and I refuse to use it since it is all GMO. I have been playing with spekt flour for over a year now and have discovered if I use a mixture of spelt and bread flour my bread is less dense and actually rises quite nicely. Now I am trying to add milled flax sead or other natural ingredients in place of some of the flour. Spelt flour is very low in gluten which makes it hard to rise but I love the flavor. Hubby not so much lol.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos! Darling pets and boy am I hungry now!!!
ReplyDeletethe food looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteHello, You Gardening Goddess! You continue to amaze me with what you can do with limited space and container gardening. You go, girl!
ReplyDeleteI want to be Lazy Leo. Oooof, just came in from the morning and bit of afternoon spent in our garden dressed in a bug shirt, head net and all as the black flies are just awful right now. Got so hot that I'm sipping iced tea and trying to cool off. If I had a perch like Leo does, I think I'd stretch out on it!
You've given me two ideas for dinner tonight. Either your grilled cheese/tomato sandwiches or your CLT sandwiches.
I can't believe that simple, simple recipe for making mayo works! You don't know how many (complicated!) recipes I've tried and not had a success in years of trying. Gotta give yours a try . . . with my fingers crossed!
that oar is too cute! my peppers are a little sad. i think it's from the rain and cool weather. i know that feeling about creating just one more raised bed! your food looks so good. i often make my own mayonnaise. it's so easy and so good. i'm glad summer has finally found you!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh that hat suits you to a tee! Perfect! I have been given help to keep blogging, well actually to do anything computer wise, I’m so glad because I would miss your posts, everything looks wonderfilled!
ReplyDeleteOH, how I would love a river down the road just like that one. Lucky you! We have to travel to similar places. I almost missed Charlie and Marlene under the cedar trees...they know where the best spots are. And Leo doing a little sunworshipping while snoozing. hehe All your fur-kids are so cute!
ReplyDeleteWe had a raized garden bed once...I think the corn attracted the mice which then attracted a snake and that kinda scared me off having a garden bed. Our climate makes it hard too, especially for someone who isn't a green thumb.
Lunch and dinner were both beautifully displayed. I used to make my own mayo years ago...so much better than the bought stuff. I always liked a little extra mustard. I know I can buy vegan mayo but might look for recipes to make my own.
Haven't watched Joe Dirt in years but I remember liking it when I did.
You look so cute in your new hat! Cool idea for using the oar.
Happy gardening!
So lovely seeing your photographs - I like your hat.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I must confess, I thought Joe Dirt was hilarious! (and I'm not a huge David Spade fan). Your meals, as always, look wonderful. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteLoved the pet roll call and such a beautiful place to live!
ReplyDeleteWhat a simple recipe for mayonnaise! I have never made it at home, but perhaps I might try.
ReplyDeleteGreenhouse looks very innovative.
Ooh look at all the food!
ReplyDeleteYour raised bed is looking good.. I envy you green thumbed folks.
you are such an amazingly energetic lady dear Rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletei am so happy for you that you got your spring eventually :)))
winter sun has healing power and absorbing beauty which invites one to step out and spend time with nature around
gardening is best way to do so :)))
i absolutely loved this serene river ,how nice to pass by everyday :)
you look GORGEOUS in lovely hat dear Rain!

your greenhouse is doing well ,i wish you BEST OF LUCK for plantations in raised bed which looks sooo cool :)
gardening shelf looks nice either
i loved your pets images ,so adorable !
hugs!
I love making mayo with my immersion blender! Homemade has the best flavor. I looked longingly at your cheese/tomato sandwiches. They just were my all time favorite and I have yet to find a GF bread that can stand up to the insides. You are so inventive and inspiring, with your container gardening and use of found objects. xo
ReplyDeleteWhat great photos. I love seeing all your pets. Then your really good looking garden bed. Then your spreads! Now I'm hungry, LOL.
ReplyDeleteBoy, it heats up fast where you are. I figured your Junes were probably cool, and maybe it heats up in July and August. And l.Look at your garden prep. I am so impressed with how you've just jumped right into summer living. That is a beautiful picture of the river near you. How wonderful your walks must be. :)
ReplyDeleteYayyyy summer !!! The bugs are bad here now too. I live all your pictures ans the food...to die for. It was raining here most of the day and only 15 c so I did some baking and cooking.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your new hat !!! U need a cow and a horse :)
Your garden looks fantastic !!!
All good stuff over at your place! I'm so glad summer has found you. We're enjoying some wonderful weather lately. Your hat is so cool!
ReplyDeleteYour meals always look so GOOD...I would put on so much weight eating like that. I have a hard enough time keeping it down as it is. Don't you just love the screened in deck life? I do, although with sinus issues this week I have stayed inside. This has been my worst yr since I stopped taking shots 12 yrs ago. I do not want to have to go back to that. Mayo...NOPE, I just buy. I had a friend though that could not eat all the UFO's (haha) all that preservatives and stuff so she made hers. Love the hate. You look great in hats, me not so much. You sure look happy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debra :) Yeehaw! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Marsha :) I can't wait to eat fresh lettuce and tomatoes! Thanks for the reply about the GF bread. I never got used to it, I don't like the taste of spelt, so I'm with your hubby! I hope you find a good recipe you can keep making with success.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jan/JFM :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Christine :)
ReplyDeleteOh thank you Mama Pea :) I'd love to be Lazy Leo most days by about 3pm lol...that's when I start to slow down. I'm glad my post gave you dinner ideas! Let me know if the mayo works for you!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Joyce :) Summer found me, then got lost again sigh. This week (we're the 14th as I type this) it's 10 C and rainy, boo hoo! My plants are all stalling!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Laurie :) I LOVE the hat! I'm so glad you got some help with your computer! I would have missed your posts too! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Serena :) The hat is great and it's so light, I forget I'm wearing it!! Having the river and lake down the road is so nice. Once in a while the huskies jump in during the hot summers! Okay I have to say that snakes scare the bleep out of me...Joe Dirt was pretty funny but some parts were just so dumb...but then again, I love that kind of humour!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jan :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jenn :) I had to confess the same, I thought Joe Dirt was pretty funny!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tpals :)
ReplyDeleteThanks TB :) Nice to see your comment :) Let me know if the mayo works for you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Hena :) I didn't start out with a green thumb! I made lots of mistakes and it's still a learning process for me!
ReplyDeleteThanks Baili :) I agree about gardening. I feel like I need it this time of year, I just wish I could do more! The greenhouse is really holding up well! I'm so happy we were able to build it with the frames we already had. Now the real test is waiting to see if the tomatoes are healthy when they finally grow! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan :) Homemade anything is the best! :) That mayo is so easy...I wish I'd know about that method years ago because I basically gave up. Finding a GF bread is a huge challenge...my gosh I have to say I feel for you. I hope you find a good one, grilled cheese is a must in life! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Leigh :) Oooh the spreads...they are back! :) I love summer "porch" food! I'm glad the post got your appetite going!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Becki :) The walks are so nice as long as it's early enough during the day when the town isn't awake yet. Lots of loose dogs in this area and if I go before 7am we're all safe. I LOVE the summer and summer living! I wish the season was longer!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sis :) Summer yay! But yeah, the black flies are bad aren't they? The deer flies just came out too, nasty things. ha ha ha...I would LOVE to have horses! Cow? I don't think so! But I guess you never know what path life presents to you right? :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Martha :) I love the hat so much, I love how light it is! Summer is hiding out this week though, I hope your weather is better than mine currently!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam :) I do LOVE the screened-in life!! :) With the bugs here, I'm so thankful for it - it woulc be too unbearable without it. A lot of the dandelions are turning puffy lately and that stuff is flying everywhere so the screens are helping with that too. The hat is great, I love it! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. I have to go backwards. I love the hat. Hubby keeps bringing me some, but they aren't all that great. I love my ball caps.
ReplyDeleteTHe food looks amazing. My husband cannot have dairy, yeast or eggs. It limits me. We have vegenaise, as mayo.
You have a great spot.
I haven't been out today, other than going down to the frog pond, as the bugs are awful, and we've had the strangest storms running through.
cheerio!
Thanks Jenn :) I love the hat too! I used to only wear ball caps, then I switched to the more "hustler" style of hat...now I can't get enough of the wide-brimmed Westerns!!! :) The bugs are nasty here too, but I'm sure you have worse in your area!
ReplyDeleteYour new hat looks fun and your skin is beautiful. Jack is my favorite and I love your smoky colored kitty. Today the tuxedo kitten bit through my nice yarn, the little booger. She is always attracted to my yarn if it hangs about.
ReplyDeleteThank you Stefanie! :) I love the new hat! It's perfect for summer! Oh, what a brat!!! When I had my pugs (when they were puppies), one of them chewed through all of my sewing patterns...I came home and nearly cried, I had a good collection of about 150 patterns at that time. I was never able to replace them!
