Sweet Treats

Hi Friends! I hope you're all doing well! I'm barely hanging on these days...I had such a bad few weeks. First the stomach flu; then we did the dreaded monthly shopping in -25C weather...then somehow I got a pet hair in my eye and it was two days before I could flush it out. I still have some irritation...Onwards and upwards right?

Yesterday we celebrated Alex's birthday and I made him this Fruit Tart with Custard. It was a great hit! I used the nectarines I'd canned in September. The rest of the fruit was frozen...I can only imagine how good this tart will be when I make it with fresh fruits!

Since we decided on no gifts until we manage to buy our property, I wanted to make him something as a gift! I found a recipe online for Kahlua Pecan Fudge. I'm not a fan of anything white chocolate but he said they are delicious. VERY sweet though!

I made him a Strawberry Gin Fizz as an apéro before dinner. It's a nice refreshing cocktail made with muddled strawberries and gin. It was such a great foodie day! :)

  1. Oh, that fruit tart looks divine! I've seen fruit dessert "pizza" but I really like the look of yours. Sounds like a wonderful day of celebration! Have you decided yet on an area to look for your new property?

  2. You are marvelous in the kitchen. I think you missed your calling. You could teach classes on cooking from scratch. Or be a party planner or a catering business. Dang, I think I gained 10 pounds just looking at all the food. Alec is one lucky man.

  3. that all looks so wonderful! i had a horrible cold from new years until about 5 days ago and now i've come down with stomach flu. i rarely get sick so i am blaming it on the very warm weather we've been having. it finally gets cold later this week so maybe that will do the flu bug in!

  6. I thought you'd been very quiet lately! Ugh, having issues that sideline a body is no fun at all. Glad to hear you're on the mend now.

Happy Birthday (belated) greetings to your wonderful partner. What lovely (full of love!) birthday treats you made for him. I know it all takes time but goes to show one doesn't have to spend oodles of money on "gifts." Sending hugs to you both!

  7. Happy birthday Alex, your fudge looks delicious and Rain's fruit tart a triumph. You are a fortunate man!
Sorry to hear about your illness, Rain. Our household is the same, long drawn-out colds seem to have weakened our resistance to various bugs and we are rather forlorn just now with trips to the doctor and antibiotics to swallow. I hope you are starting to feel much better.

  12. Hi, Rain!
I checked in on all your blogs and decided to comment on this one because the fruit tart with custard looks so delicious! Everything looks delicious! I hope that Alex had a great birthday yesterday. You live in an oasis of calm compared with me ~ so grounded! Our lives are up in the air right now ~ nothing bad! ~ just trying to make some decisions and downsize even if we stay in our house. How can I have reached this age and have no idea what's around the corner? Oh well, never a dull moment! Wishing you lots of success funding your property. Sending you a big hug!

  17. That picture of the tart looks like it's straight out of a cooking magazine. It looks amazing! And while I'm not particularly fond of fruits, I'd sure try that!!! So sorry to read that you've been under the weather, Rain. The flu can really wear a person down - even after you're feeling better. I hope you're climbing out of it by now.

  27. Rain,

The fruit tart with custard looks very yummy, so does the fudge but I'm not a fan of alcohol flavored items. It's too sharp for my taste buds. Holy moly is it ever cold there! We're freezing this morning with 14ºF (-10ºC) at 6am. Our forecast isn't looking too promising for the next two weeks. Old Man winter is kicking up his heels in our parts for sure! Keep warm, my friend!
