A New Challenge

Hi Everyone :)

I hope your weekend is starting off well. All I can hear is VROOM VROOM VROOM with the odd hysterical lady-laugh coming from all sides of me...no I'm not nuts lol, it's snowmobile season here in our usually quiet little village! For some reason...the tourist-men love to rev those motors and for some further odd reason, the women they are with are terribly impressed lol.

Michael from the Scribble Picnic decided to challenge himself this year. He is going to do a drawing a day and asked if any of his friends would like to do the same. There are no rules, the idea is to challenge yourself to be creative each day for however long you want. I'm up for the challenge! I'm going to tweak his idea a little. I'm going to focus on drawing, as it's my weakness, but I'm also going to paint some days too.

I think it's important to find time for creativity each day and I'm committed (with the exception of those crazy shopping days I subject myself to). Anyone else want to join? I am not very active on Instagram, but I'll be posting my creations daily (@rainfrancesgarden#dailysketchplan2018) and also once a week on my blog.

I decided to start with a drawing of Chilly Willy, the Looney Tunes penguin. I'm a fan of Looney Tunes and I love that Chilly Willy cries ice cubes! Plus today is Penguin Awareness Day, that's how I got my idea. :)

When I started watercolour painting, I just couldn't get the hang of it so I challenged myself to paint every day and after a month, I loved it. This new challenge for me will also be a very good part of my daily routine of self-help and self-therapy to conquer anxiety.

Winter is all about comfort here and this Chicken Pot Pie is perfect for a weekend of hibernation!

Sundown along the river. I hope you're all keeping warm and cozy!

  1. Oh no! Invasion of snowmobiles! Hope they go home, on Sun. night!

Yes, warm and cozy inside, here!!!!

I love how you put "crust things," on top of your pies. :-) I tried to do that, for family Christmas pie. But... My Christmas tree, *went-north*. -gigggles-

Stay warm! Put on ear muffs!!!! To deal with the VARRRROOOMMMMMM. Maybe...?

  2. Chicken pot pie...that looks good!

We had snowmobiles all around when I was growing up in Michigan, but all I remember are the boots. Snowmobile boots are the coolest boots ever. Or they were, in the 1970's...moonboots were a close second...and goucho boots. Ok, feel like I lost focus there for a bit.

Kinda funny you lost a bit of your quiet day to revving engines and adoring womenfolk cheers, but hey... what can ya do?

  3. Such a yummy looking pie - however I'd have to indulge in a veggie version!
Tonight I'm grilling (indoor grill/panini maker) Italian polenta slices with roasted veggies + fish and green beans. These winter evenings demand good tasty food don't they. Right now I'm indulging myself with a glass of sherry as I catch up on comments - my aperitif!

Love the penguin sketch - love ALL penguins having spent hours with them in certain frozen points south!!!!!!

Enjoy the weekend Rain - sorry about the noisy riders!

  4. I wish I could talk myself into doing that challenge. I know I need the practice but some days when I do what I HAVE to, there is no energy left for the things I WANT to. Oh, such is age!! It's not for sissies, that's for sure.

  5. Nice look at the Frozen river. Your Chilly Willy is so cute. I hope you come to grips on your anxiety. The pot pie looks perfect and comforting. I wonder if this book might help you with your anxiety? https://www.amazon.ca/Cognitive-Behavioural-Therapy-Dummies-Branch-ebook/dp/B0042JSM14

  6. I do sometimes long to be somewhere and experience "real snow" for a winter, then reality kicks in and I am glad to just have the rain.

  8. it's the same in front of my house with motorcycles. this is one major reason i love bad weather. it keeps the crowds down!

  9. I love your drawing...he is too cute. I love that you are making it a point to do this daily. I have a friend I used to work with that is also doing this....he is drawing a facial pic of someone daily. He is amazing. He is also the only one in TN that draws the faces of criminals for the TN Bureau of Investigation and the local police. At this point in my life I can't commit to making myself do something like that....I have dealing with a painful body that just wants to make life hell right now. Keep on drawing....

  10. I thought that was Chilly Willy! Oh boy, my teenager would plop herself down at your dinner table and wait to be served some of your chicken pot pie.

  11. Good Morning Rain! I don't like to draw but do like to do the other crafts like quilting, knitting, crocheting and play piano. Have fun with your drawings. I love chicken pot pie and yours is so fancy! Nancy

  12. I love Chilly Willy. He is so cute. My niece collects penquins because of him. How do your fur babies react to all the snowmobile ruckus? Mine would be barking non-stop. The pot pie looks so inviting. Pure comfort food. We finally got a bit of winter here. It rained and our high was below 60. Sounds warm to most peoples but remember our summertime temps are always above 105 so that is a 50 degree drop for us.

  13. Your little penguin is adorable! I like Chilly Willy, too, especially the ice cube tears. So cute! I think it's amazing that you will draw every day. That's quite a challenge. I'm down to once or twice a week now with everything that's been going on. Hopefully I can pick up the pace soon!

  14. I really dislike snowmobiles and 4-wheelers....they destroy the peacefulness of nature but I know they are also good for getting stranded people and saving lives in certain conditions. But, I used to be on my farm during a quiet beautiful snow that was unmarked by humans and they would come roaring through the ditches and onto my property and spoil it all! I guess you have to take the bad with the good and vie-versa.
Many times my sex(female) have embarassed me acting like fools when males are around. I''m grateful my daughter is not that way....maybe I did something right? I admire strong, fearless women that have a backbone....not simpering, manipulative ones. I'll shut up now! LOL!
LOve your Chilly Willy....it's been years since I last saw him! Stay warm and enjoy your beautiful pot pie. It warmed up here and I even washed a few windows yesterday. Today is in the 60's F and it's supposed to rain later tonight so I might wash a few more windows. It got so cold so early here that I never got a chance last Fall. Have a great quiet weekend....do you have ear plugs?

  15. That is a really good challenge. I think it is not only helpful with just making creativity a daily activity but with can help with overcoming our own inner critic by doing it as an activity and getting the critic used to the fact that whether or not it likes it, we will continue on.

  16. Hi Wisps of Words :) Yes! I love to "crust" my pies! I'm always looking for new ideas for fancy crusts. They are pretty easy once you have the dough all ready. LOL...I don't think anything will muffle out that darn VROOM...only a good downpour of RAIN lol! :)

  17. Thanks Sandi :) Pot pies are so good! I've made beef and fish ones too. And they are pretty easy...good for 2 meals! :) LOL...moonboots, I do remember those! Ha! Adoring womanfolk cheers...they just sound so silly! Almost primitive...me big man make noise, you woman, enjoy. :)

  18. Hi Mary :) I've made a nice pesci pie too with haddock, potatoes and carrots...oooh very yummy! A glass of sherry sounds mighty fine to me! Alex loves sherry and port, he has a nice collection and we indulge once in a while too. And thanks, the penguin sketch was fun! I've only seen live penguins at the biodome exhibit in Montreal. They were great to watch, and lucky you to have spent time with them in person! :)

  19. Hi Latane :) Honestly, if Michael had suggested this three months ago, I'd be in the same boat. The dog situation has settled down so I can find some time. Plus winter for me is a hibernation time, so I spend more time on my hobbies usually.

  20. Hi Christine :) Thanks, I love Chilly Willy! I think that the program I'm following currently (it's an 8 part program based on theory, meditation and breathing techniques) is really helping me a lot. Thank you for thinking of me with the book link! :)

  21. Hi Pam :) I know what you mean...I think that I would miss the snow a lot, until I remember the aches and pains from shoveling...and the damn VROOM....

  22. Hi Laurie :) Thank you! I did have a tough time with watercolour because I was painting according to what I thought I should do. When I let go a little, it became more fun and I really enjoy that medium the most now! Ah yes...when the weekenders leave, we have peace again! And up north, I'd say 99% of them ARE noisy. If it's not the snowmachines and quads in the summer...it's all night parties around the fire and fireworks. Ugh! When we buy, it'll be very isolated!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Joyce :) I remember you telling me about your motorcycle problem...I don't know which is worse. Our last rental was on a provincial highway and we had motorcycle issues there too. I can't stand it!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi Pam :) Thank you! I am going to really force myself to take a little time each morning to draw. It's something I've really wanted to do for a long time, but lacked the motivation. Same with the painting. The challenge of the Scribble Picnic motivates me a lot! That's really cool about your friend! I'm sure he's quite the artist to have that job!

  25. Hi Stefanie :) Lol...you are all welcome if you ever venture to the north side of the continent! :)

  26. Hi Debra :) He's adorable, poor fella just wants a friend in Bugs... :)

  27. Hi Nancy :) Thank you! I'm trying to have fun with the cooking, to me, it's a hobby too. :) I'm glad you make time for your hobbies, I need to start quilting one of these days! :)

  28. Hi Marsha :) Chilly Willy is very cute, I'd have him as a pet...oh wait, that would make NINE pets lol...For the most part, the dogs just look out the window when the ahem, idiots drive their snow mobiles on the road. They are not supposed to in the village, but the police presence here is a joke, so they all use our road to get to the entrance of the trail quicker...but Jack sometimes barks when they fly by. Your summer temps are really hot! I'm sure a little snow is a nice change!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi Martha :) Even a few times a week is a good challenge to draw! I think the more I do it, the easier it gets and also the more I like it! That's what happened with the painting, so I'm hoping I really enjoy the drawing too!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Sam :) I know what you mean...it's the recreational snowmobliers, motorcylists, quad-people that just seem to be the most annoying. When we buy, we'll definitely be looking for a much quieter area...and trust me I WILL do my due dilligence!!

Lol...you did do something right, bringing up a strong woman in your daughter! I don't know why women act that way. Maybe some of them TRULY are impressed by revving motors...I'm impressed by a man who washes the dishes lol...but I don't giggle about it ha ha! Oh gosh, ear plugs...I do have some, but all I can hear is my heart beating and that sometimes makes me uncomfortable lol!

  31. Hi TB :) It's true, my inner critic rears up once in a while. But the more I paint and draw, the more I gain confidence and tell that silly critic to hush up! :)

  32. Hi Rain, good luck with the art site. Your pictures are far better than I could ever do. Being disabled like I am prevents me from taking part in anything. Not that i’m complaining because the carers they have here try their very best to make everything alright. It’s not their fault I can’t take part.
We don’t usually have a lot of snow here but we have had one or two days like that picture. Playing music on YouTube is how I pass the days now.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi Terry :) Thank you! I will do my best to keep challenging myself! I love You Tube...I watch movies, tv shows, documentaries, listen to music...and lately, I've been following some self-healing channels too. It's such a great thing to have to have available!

  34. Love that drawing so cute!!! Pie look great :)

  35. Those snowmobiles would drive me crazy lol!
I think it's a great idea to do something creative at least once a day.
I have followed you on IG and will follow your journey!

  36. I just came back from winnipeg. Took kom to the airport. Things might get back to normal sometime soon ... i wish i had your chicken pot pie right now !!! Wish Alex happy belated birthday from me pls. I need sleeeeeep !!!!

  37. I loathe snowmobiles. And snowmobilers - or at least the ones that rip through my yard at 1AM. The only satisfaction I got this weekend is that the weather spiked up and the snow is melting like crazy. This also leaves ice, so - at midnight on Saturday, I heard the inevitable loud drone of the SMs, reving like mad, and then scrAPE! and silence. Heehee. I love Looney Tunes, too. Especially my hero, Bugs Bunny. And I love, love, love that pie crust decoration!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Jenn :) Thanks :) I'm really hoping that I can keep it up, even after gardening season begins! :)

  39. Hi Nik :) That's a long way to the airport! Hope your mom has a safe flight home, I bet you miss her :) Enjoy your rest, hopefully you'll find some calm soon!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Susan :) Oh my gosh 1am??? At least the fools here are quiet after midnight. And I bet those same people will complain if someone makes noise in the city near their homes. LOL at scrAPE...lol...My hero is Bugs too, I'm going to try to draw him at some point, it's harder that it looks though! :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I just love penguins!! And I love chilly willy! :) I remember him crying ice cubes! I love your drawings! :)

Shame about the motor heads revving their motors. Are their necks red too? :) ;)

I wish I could make pastry. I suck at it and I keep trying though. Maybe this is how I should challenge myself?

Oh that last photo!!! That is just damn magickal!

    ReplyDelete
  42. We used to have the weekend snowmobilers roaring through town until...the bar closed. I can't remember the last one I've heard, a couple years ago at least.

The drawing challenge is interesting. I'm trying to do something creative every day, usually writing or knitting.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Dianna :) Thank you!! :) Isn't Chilly Willy a little thing you just want to hug and take home??? :) No more crying ice cubes in my home that's for sure lol! Motorheads lol...reminds me of that band, I think I liked them for one day ha ha! IF their necks were red, I think they'd actually be more respectful lol...it's the city people who have no respect for people living in the country!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi TPals! :) Thank you for visiting! :) Oh lucky you! The village here promotes the trails. Had we known when we looked at the place, we probably would not have signed a lease. Oh well, we try to make do and ignore the noise as much as possible! I think it's great that you create something daily! I love to write my blogs and when I find time, I knit too! :)

  45. That pot pie looks good. We used to have chicken pot pie a lot when I was a kid, back in the 1950's and 1960's, but it has largely gone out of style down here I guess, as I never see on anymore.

I like Chilly Willy. I can remember seeing his cartoons at the outdoor theater. In those days, the movies started out with two cartoons before the main movie. Usually, the little kids went to sleep in the back of the car after the cartoons and the mom and dad watched the movie.

I don't think we have any outdoor theaters anymore either.

Sure do like that picture of the snow in the forest. If a fellow were all bundled up, and was walking his dogs there, it would be a peaceful scene wouldn't it?

I hate snowmobiles. But if the women like them maybe I better get one. Or Two! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ha ha ha ha Harry...the type of women who giggle when a snowmobile motor is revving up...well, trust me, it would be a passing fancy lol! ;)

I make pot pies regularly in the winter, they are so easy and very comforting on a cold night! The river is gorgeous when it's all frozen...but I'm still too scared to walk on it. Moving water an currents and all that. I walked across a frozen lake once and I was terrified the entire time!

I went to a drive in movie just once in my life when I lived on Price Edward Island. I went in my pj's with the dogs in the car, it was great! :) There aren't any here though. I guess it's a lost phenomena.

  47. I had to chuckle when I read about the men revving their snow mobiles and their ladies being impressed. Though I feel your pain. That pot pie looks awesome. Tell me it was delicious. I really should try to make one.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Becki it is kind of laughable in a pathetic way lol...Look at me so judgmental lol! But yes, the noise is awful some weekends. At least there aren't any bars in this area or it would be unbearable! Oh yes, the pot pie WAS delicious!!! :) Make one!!
