The theme for the Scribble Picnic this week is Boo! How appropriate for this time of year and also for me! I love anything scary, spooky and creepy! I woke up SO early yesterday morning, it was still dark out and I was on a roll alright! I started off painting some zombies with acrylics. Zombies definitely have a Boo! factor!! I remember the first zombie movie I watched was in 1984 at a second-run movie theater, Night of the Living Dead. It scared me REAL GOOD.
I haven't done a watercolour in a while, and I felt like painting some more. I looked out the window and all I could see was dark blue and black. It was pouring rain so there was no sunrise and it was drearily dark out. I remembered seeing an image like this online a while back so I figured I'd paint something like it! Walking in the pitch dark with just a lantern can be quite spooky! When I lived more up north many years ago, I would walk my pugs at night and all I had was my headlamp for light. Once in a while I'd hear a sound on either side of me. In the dim light of the headlamp, I could never see what was making the sounds. It got me spooked enough that I'd jump through the roof when a mouse ran across in front of us!
I'm a big fan of Poe as well. When I lived alone, I used to read his short stories by candlelight and scare myself silly. :) This is my Raven, another acrylic painting.
And I did this one just for fun! What's a Boo! theme without ghosts?? :) This is another watercolour.
Gasp! My October Wall of Horrors is full! I still have another week before Halloween too. This was so much fun to do, and I loved the theme this week Michael! :)
And just to end this post without giving you nightmares ;) here are our sleepy little angels! :) No nightmares here. :)

What a fabulous selection of art for today's theme, Rain...very spooky and 'boo' worthy! I'm a horror fan too...the spookier, the better.
ReplyDeleteA pity Australia doesn't celebrate Halloween like they do in the States. I still stock up on goodies for the occasional Trick-or-Treaters who might knock on our door. :)

So.....I cannot comment on the zombies because zombies FREAK ME OUT. I can, however, comment on the lantern pic AND the raven. :) I would like to buy all of your spooky paintings (sans zombies) as they are just perfect!! That lantern one! I am thinking my next tattoo will be raven/crow themed.

Stella reminds me of our Willow who is no longer with us :( She would sleep with her teeth showing and almost always on her back (they call this roaching) - so adorable!!!! Willow either had whippet or greyhound in her, she roached all over the place!
I sure wish I could draw things other than stick people, Rain. (lol) Love your scary work, and I can tell you're definitely set for the season! You know I always love looking at your furry friends. Hugs...RO

ReplyDeleteI love the paintings....Great job. But those sleeping babes are adorable. Thanks for the comment on my blog. The porch decoration is my brothers porch, been house/dog/bird sitting since Thursday...will be heading for the house in an hour or so. I leave before they get here but I only leave when I know about what time they will be in so the babes are not locked in the house for too long. A few hours is fine.

ReplyDeleteRain, your angels are so sweet and your art, scary but cool! There are so many that I can't really focus on one so will talk about the zombie one which I love, btw! I can tell you DEF liked the theme. It's a calculated risk as I know some hate scary (And I don't like gore even though we did zombie crawl this weekend in our town and won third place for best costumes which were creepy cool Pierrots- as mentioned in last SP post).

ReplyDeleteOh you are for sure a spook lover ... what an array of spooky pictures each as good as or better than the other ... don't think I could pick a favorite, though the Raven tugs on me a bit as a bird lover ... but, then the figure walking in the dark with the lantern is the most artistic and beautifully done. Well, anyway, you do have a house full of fur babies, as do I so I can appreciate the warmth you gain from them. Speaking of spooky, my dog and I were walking two night ago and heard a pack of coyotes howling and yipping very close to where we were. It sent chills up my spine ... needless to say, we high tailed it back into the house :0 Great post, Rain ...

You are such an artist! Did you study art or are you just naturally gifted? I love your scary watercolors. The raven is outstanding and so is the pitch dark one with the lantern. Yes, I know what you mean...carrying a lantern to the barn to feed my animals after I got home from work when I had my little farm....it's like everyone can see you but you can only see right in front of yourself....like a sitting duck! I had my dogs with me though so I felt pretty safe. Pitch dark can be scary....one time I walked alone on the beach in Miami...many moons ago...over 40 and I love the ocean but when there is no moon and it is really dark and when you look out at it, it is just one huge dark abyss.....it can really be scary! I should read Poe...I have a collection of his stories and have never read them.....shame on me and here I was looking for a Halloween book to read! LOL!
ReplyDeleteYour 'babies' are so cute and look how well the dogs and cats get along! They are so darling! I love Stella who seems to be smiling in her sleep and Pavlof all cuddled up in the blankies...they are just precious and so clean! LOL! I wish mine were but as soon as the outside is finished and we are in for the winter I'm going to give it a try. I may need a different method for each one but I have a plan! Tomorrow night we have frost warnings so I brought ALL my plants in....except I forgot the herbs...duh....I do have the basil in and the others really weren't doing that well anyway. We'll see. I brought them in today because it's supposed to rain tomorrow but if it doesn't maybe I can run out and repot some. I'm tired....signing off....enjoy your cozy Hygge weather!

ReplyDeleteThanks Pam :) It's so nice of you to be pet sitting for your brother like that. I'm sure they feel lonely at times...ours are lucky, we are almost always home, at least one or the other. Before we adopted Marlene, we were told she was an escape artist. But she was left alone for up to 16 hours a day in a basement...poor thing. Now she has taken over my love set lol!

I'm not into gore either, I just like that "jump out of your seat" factor...and I mentioned the Klaus Kinski version of Nosferatu on your blog, there is a scene there that just brings chills up your spine...that's pretty cool! :) I'm more brave walking alone at night when I have the dogs with me that's for sure! I've gotten quite scared walking at night in my area where the only light is the moon if it's out! :) I loved this week's theme, thanks for hosting! :)

ReplyDeleteHi Andrea :) Thanks so much :) Oh gosh, that is chilling to hear coyotes on a walk. Their howls are beautiful but there is always that threat too. We don't have coyotes this close to the village, but we do have an isolated fishing spot and at sunset in the summer, we always heard the coyotes howling. Kind of put shivers up our spines too!

I started doing oil painting by following the Bob Ross PBS show The Joy of Painting. Then I branched off a bit on my own but I always traced my paintings first. I think as I built confidence, I was able to get even more creative. I will openly admit that I do paint images I see on the internet if I find them compelling enough! The Raven was one of them. I saw something like that with a raven on a building and I wanted to recreate it. The zombies though, that's just my creepy thoughts at work lol...
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, yes, sitting duck lol...I feel that way when I'm out with the dogs in the yard before bed! We have no lights out there and I have a headlamp, but I feel like I'm WAY too visible! Stella looks like she's smiling, yet, but you know what? Alex always pulls up their "lips" to show their teeth and we tease them a bit and say "don't eat me!" and they get all excited...for Stella, her lips just stayed that way lol...The dogs are CLEAN for now...they love to roll around in the yard, and Marlene loves to dig a dirt hole and sleep in it, much cooler I'm guessing, thus the monthly baths! It's not too bad in the winter though.
Poe is great to read by candlelight on a stormy night! :) Although I've seen The Simpsons version of The Raven and sometimes I can't get those images out of my head now lol...kind of ruined the scare factor for me!
Hi Wanda :) You don't have to apologize! :) I know you're busy packing for your doggie! :) When we go on day trips with the dogs, they have their own stuff all packed too! Your comment made me laugh...well, we still have Halloween...and I found another wall with a little space, so I'm hoping I have time to paint a few more spooky paintings! :)
