Fried Green Tomatoes with Dipping Sauce
Fried Green Tomatoes with Dipping Sauce
(Makes enough appetizers for 4 people)
✎ Print Recipe
Ingredients
For the Dipping Sauce:
1 cup mayonnaise or sour cream
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
Dash Tabasco
Salt and pepper to taste
Worcestershire sauce to taste
Dash dried parsley
For the Fried Green Tomatoes
4 large green, firm tomatoes (I had small ones, so I used 12 small tomatoes)
Salt and brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 cup flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 tsp salt
Dash pepper
Grape seed oil for frying (or vegetable oil)
Directions
1. Slice tomatoes 1/4 inch thick. Discard the ends. Sprinkle with salt and a little bit of brown sugar. Let sit for 15 minutes. Pat with a paper towel when ready to use. Meanwhile, mix all of the ingredients for your dipping sauce and keep in the fridge.
2. Whisk eggs and milk together in a medium-size bowl. Scoop flour onto a plate. Mix cornmeal, bread crumbs, salt and pepper on another plate. Dip tomatoes into flour to coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Dredge in breadcrumbs to completely coat.
3. In a large skillet, pour oil (enough so that there is 1/2 inch of oil in the pan) and heat over a medium heat.
4. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Drain them on paper towels.
Note: A way to test if your oil is ready - dip the end of a wooden spoon into the oil, if it starts to sizzle, it should be ready to fry.
